Signs of ADHD in adults
ADHD presents differently from one person to another, and many people reach adulthood without recognising that their difficulties may be linked to the condition. Common signs include:

Choose a video or in-person appointment and a consultant psychiatrist. Most patients are seen within days.

Complete pre-assessment forms
Secure online questionnaires (ASRS, WURS, developmental history) plus an informant form for someone who knew you as a child.

Attend your assessment
A 90–120 minute DIVA-5 structured interview and psychiatric assessment. You receive your outcome at the end wherever possible, and a full report within five working days.
04
Begin treatment, if appropriate
Medication titration with fortnightly reviews, therapy or coaching, and a shared care request to your GP once you are stable.

About adult ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects around 3–4% of adults in the UK. It is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that interfere with day-to-day functioning. Many adults reach their 30s, 40s or later before being diagnosed, often after years of feeling that they have to work twice as hard as everyone else.
How is ADHD diagnosed?
There is no single test. Diagnosis rests on a structured clinical interview by a specialist, evidence of symptoms since childhood, impairment in at least two settings, and the exclusion of other explanations. We use the DIVA-5 interview alongside validated rating scales and, where possible, an informant account, in line with NICE guideline NG87.
Conditions that can look like ADHD
Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, autism, sleep disorders, thyroid problems and the after-effects of trauma can all mimic or coexist with ADHD. A consultant assessment is designed to tell these apart, which is why it takes time.
How is adult ADHD treated?
Treatment is individual. Where appropriate we prescribe licensed first- and second-line medications including methylphenidate (e.g. Concerta XL), lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse), dexamfetamine, atomoxetine and guanfacine, after a physical health check. Non-medication options include ADHD-focused CBT, coaching, workplace adjustments and practical strategies for sleep, organisation and emotional regulation.
Is this available on the NHS?
Yes. If you are registered with a GP in England you can be referred to us under NHS Right to Choose, at no cost to you. The assessment is identical to our private service.
