What to expect

Your first appointment lasts 60–90 minutes. Your psychiatrist will take a full history of your current difficulties, past mental health, physical health, medication, family history and personal circumstances. Where appropriate we use validated rating scales and may request blood tests or information from your GP.

You leave with a working diagnosis, a clear explanation of what we think is going on, and a treatment plan which may include medication, psychological therapy, lifestyle changes or a combination. A written report follows within five working days and can be shared with your GP.

Dementia & memory assessment

Our old-age psychiatrists provide comprehensive memory assessments for people concerned about forgetfulness, confusion or changes in personality. The assessment includes a detailed history (ideally with a family member), cognitive testing such as the ACE-III, review of physical health and medication, and, where indicated, arrangement of brain imaging. We provide a clear diagnosis, treatment where available and practical guidance for families and carers.

Second opinions

If you have an existing diagnosis and are unsure whether it is right, or whether your treatment is optimal, we offer independent second-opinion consultations with a consultant psychiatrist.
